What does the word “snapshot” mean to you? I think a lot of your answer will depend on if you are of an age demographic that thinks “selfies and snapchat” or if you grew up getting film developed, waiting a few hours or days, and then poring over your memories in print form. Those images didn’t often look great by today’s standard, but they seemed to contain something more meaningful than the accumulation of images being constantly generated today. While Chris Faust takes full advantage of the digital world to make his reference images, his perspective is informed by that time when the only way to see our photos was to get them printed. According to Britannica a snapshot is: An informal photograph that is taken quickly. A quick view or a small amount of information that tells you a little about what someone or something is like. Faust’s works invite an intimate look inside what captures his attention, and we get a glimpse of his memories whether important or of a simple fleeting occurrence. These moments are translated not as a one-to-one replica but with the artist’s particular lens lending a dreamlike quality to his work.
“The camera captures a split second of time, photographs become memories. With painting and drawing I’m able to relive the moment, like an extended memory – time is stretched and lived in again, a sort-of time loop. These pictures have all been made over an extended period – some very recent and some many years ago. Brief moments in that time frame are stretched out through their making. Some moments are significant, some just randomly noticed, some through my father’s eyes. All are linked together through drawing as memories collected over time, the artist says.”
