Shakespeare grew up during the reign of Elizabeth I, who was an intelligent and influential Queen, impacting her country’s hopes and fears. And across his plays, he writes those anxieties and possibilities onto his women characters. From siren queens like Margaret, Lady Macbeth, and Cleopatra to wayward leaders like Titania and Olivia to redemptive characters like Hermione, Juliet, and Miranda, Shakespeare drew on classical mythology and the political storms of his day to reinvent archetypes of female leadership. Created and performed by Shakespearean actress Poornima Kirby, this jewel of a play on Thursday, March 13 from 1:00-2:00 pm, dances between Elizabeth’s story and Shakespeare’s life as a writer and father to two strong-minded daughters. With humor, history, and sparkling poetry, it asks: what happens when a woman leads? This special performance is generously co-sponsored by Brigham House
